Analysis
In "Text message 1", we can see that there is no particular opening; "Charlie" goes straight into the point of the messages. This is most likely due to the participants being friends so there is no need for openings and closings as it is deemed as a waste of time, and also because the nature of the text message is about meeting so the matter is slightly urgent, leading to the messages being as streamlined as possible. "Charlie" uses the acronym "wya" (meaning "where you at") and I respond with "omw" (meaning "on my way"). This use of acronyms further highlights the urgency of the situation, as neither participant has the time to write out the whole phrase, especially when both participants know what each acronym means. Also, the acronym "wya" doesn't make sense, even when unraveled, as "where you at" doesn't make any sense grammatically. This further highlights the colloquial nature of the conversation, as both participants know that it means "where are you", but still choose to use "wya", possibly because the acronym sounds better and is easier to type. The response "omw" also makes no sense, as responding "on my way" to someone asking for your location doesn't make sense grammatically, but pragmatically the reason one participant is asking for the other's location is because they are asking how close the other person is to them, or maybe just telling them to come and meet them. So, in this case, "on my way" makes sense as it tells the participant that they should meet soon, as the participant understands why the other is asking for his location. This shared pragmatic understanding further implies the relationship between the two participants; they are friends who understand each other's use of language in that particular situation.
