Matthew Engel, a British writer, claims that American English (and the "Americanisms" that come with it) will have completely absorbed the British English language by 2120, in his new book "That's the way it crumbles". He also claims that on average, British English speakers use around 300-400 "Americanisms" a day without realizing, and even more for teenagers, "if they use that many words a day". In this article published by the BBC, Hephzibah Anderson comes to the realization that despite being British born and bred, he has lost his mother tongue, and is instead a slave to the "Americanisms" that Engel warns us about. He also tries to convince us, the reader, that we are trapped in the same American English cage unknowingly.
